SWOG Cancer Research Network – Virtual Spring Group Meeting, April 22-25

The spring SWOG meeting will go on(line)!

Given the current crisis worldwide due to COVID-19, and with numerous shelter-in-place advisories and travel restrictions ongoing, SWOG Cancer Research Network is moving its spring group meeting online. Leadership is in close communication with all research committee chairs, session content creators, and support staff, and agendas are being translated to a virtual format utilizing SWOG’s standing WebEx meeting infrastructure. For more information on the full agenda visit the event page. For answers to many common questions, visit the meeting FAQ.

#SWOGonc remains our social rallying point.

Much of the original meeting agenda will go forward in a virtual format. This means we’ll all be able to connect via Twitter to share updates, ask questions, and make new connections across the group’s extensive network. Look for helpful posts from SWOG‘s main account, as well as other active members of the #SWOGonc community, including digital engagement committee chair Dr. Don Dizon, top influencers from the fall SWOG meeting (see below) – and of course, us! (@SupportingSWOG).

Special sessions that will move to fall 2020:

  • Special Recognition Awards remain open for nominations in all categories. Four awards will be announced at the plenary I (translational medicine) and plenary II (general) events in Chicago this September. Know a member who should be recognized for their great deeds? The nomination process is simple and the resulting good feeling is priceless.
  • For the third time, we’ll host a Livingston Lecture in honor of past member, leader, and legend in various research circles, Dr. Robert

Boyd Livingston. This year’s speaker – now slated for September – will be Dr. Gabriel Hortobagyi who will give his talk as part of the breast committee’s main session.

  • The SWOG poster session will make its return in Chicago. Our staff has been in communication with previously planned presenters. In addition, we’ll be reaching out to all who were nominated or applied and accepted to present in order to make arrangements for September.
  • The Jeri and Noboru Oishi Symposium, hosted by and for SWOG’s nurse oncologists and clinical research associates, will be held at

the fall meeting only. Look for the September event to include a special tribute to its namesake, Dr. Noboru Oishi, who passed peacefully on March 5, 2020.

Interested in supporting the Livingston Lecture or Oishi Symposium? Gifts of any size can be designated and directed to sustain these valuable events for years to come.

And how about our spring award announcements?

The Impact Award application submission deadline has been extended, and grant awards will be announced at a later date. Coltman Fellowship and Career Engagement Award applications will undergo review as planned, and grantees will be announced on Friday, April 24 in the regularly scheduled SWOG Front Line post (via swog.org and email).

Of course, we can’t help make great group meetings happen without the generous support of our donors. What’s more, group meetings are an important time for our fundraising efforts, as we bring in many of our individual gifts while on site each spring and fall. All gifts – regardless of size – mean so much to us in this challenging time.
